Do not be surprised if you get stuck behind a tractor, as this is one of the most agriculturally focused towns west of the capital.
From downtown, you can see the nearly 600-acre coffee plantation owned by the Naranjo co-op, which started in 1968 and now boasts nearly 2000 members, most of whom own small 2-4 acre farms.
Naranjo is about 45 minutes from the SJO airport. The exit from the Pan Am highway into downtown is a quick 2-kilometer drive. Arenal volcano is a scenic 2.5-hour drive. Naranjo is considered to be in the middle of the country, making trips to the beach, the northern plains, and the southern jungles quicker and easier than from most locations.
The downtown of Naranjo is a classic version of a Tico town. It consists of a central market, a couple of grocery stores, a gorgeous park and church, and scattered specialty shops.

That is Palmares’ claim to fame. Tucked between Naranjo, Atenas, and San Ramon, this small town is known for its civic parties every January and its upper-middle-class population.
Every January, the entire country of Costa Rica celebrates with Palmares! Horse parades, bull fighting (tico style), a carnival, and lots of beer and fun make these “fiestas” the best in the country. This is an experience everyone should have at least once!
With an average altitude of about 1017m or 3336 feet above sea level and a downtown population of about 4000 people this is a quaint little burg.
Well known for its ample quintas (1 + acres estates) and nearly perfect temperatures, Ticos have settled and not left this town since the beginning of time.
Properties are scattered across the mountains surrounding the town, most of them owned by locals. There are very few ex-pats here, but those that live here love the friendly neighbors and the great location, less than 10 minutes to San Ramon! and less than 30 to Atenas and Grecia.
Located just off the PanAm highway, Palmares offers country living with a great location.
Downtown Palmares is small but has nice grocery stores, trendy coffee shops, health food stores, and easy walkability.
Palmares is home to one of the best private hiking places in the area, Madre Verde, just 5 minutes out of town, which offers challenging hikes that lead you to the top of the western ridge of the central valley, offering views of San Jose and the surrounding towns.
Let’s hope you do not fall too in love with Palmares because properties have always been scarce here, Ticos who live here do not generally want to sell, and because of the topography and small size, there are never very many places for sale here.
